Weather Data 2011

Wind

Predictably, given the location (north-east face of a Pennine valley), most of our apparent wind blows from the S/SW, straight from Lancashire. Similarly, the strongest gusts come from the same direction. The gusts aren't shown; these are 180s average wind directions. Wind speed averages about 4–5mph, though a 'windy' day blows at 16–18mph. Gusts are 15–30mph, with the highest have been just under 60mph for March-May; June and July have been under 25mph. Interestingly, the wind direction in July was mostly east: we had a lot of weather fronts coming in from the Irish Sea.

Rain

Britain's been pretty dry this spring, although our April wasn't as bad as many places. The figure for March is inaccurate; it only covers the period from the 14th, and the August figure is only up to the 3rd. In both April and May, almost all of the rain has fallen in just one or two days, rather than having a series of wet days. June and July, though drier, had a greater number of wet days.

Temperature

It's been a warm spring, as well as a dry one: April during the middle of the day was warmer than May. In the same vein, the warmest days averaged about 20°C, and the coolest were still about 9°C. There were also only a couple of frosts, and not hard ones at that—about -1°C. June has been quite fine, with an average day max of 18°C. The hottest days have average 25°C, with maxima around 30°C. There have, though, been a couple of surprisingly cold nights in early June (3 to 4°C).
